On Saturday, Anambra police arrested a 30-year-old man, Sunday Nwadiagha, for allegedly raping a 75-year-old woman.
Police said in a statement that in collaboration with other security agencies, the suspect, originally from the Eyiba Ebonyi area, was arrested around 4pm.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect was caught red-handed on the victim's farm in Nkwelle Awkuzu, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga Police Relations Officer (PPRO) Anambra, who signed the statement, it said.
"arrest of the suspect follows the cries of an old woman, who attracted the attention of passersby and neighbors who rushed to the scene and arrested the robber."
Before he was arrested and handed over to police, an angry mob had gathered and beaten Nwadiagha, Ikenga said.

The provincial commissioner of police, Echeng Echeng, has reiterated his campaign to crack down on members of the public, who are always taking the law into their own hands by doing forestry justice for suspected criminals, a police spokesman said.
“The community should take such suspects to the nearest police station every time they are arrested.
Ikenga said, This will give the police the opportunity to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct of the suspects; and bring them into justice according to the existing laws, ”
